Database-supported authenticity checks

Authentication solutions for all needs

Scenario 1: Large numbers of objects

With this solution, scan data derived on a routine basis at an early point in the life of a product, e.g., upon its manufacture or at the time of its packaging, is stored in a database. Such data can then be retrieved in seconds at any time using sophisticated search and compare software for comparison with current scans. This comparison operation is even quicker upon targeted access to the corresponding data set. The selection is made on the basis of a product identification number or, for instance, on the basis of batch identification that is assigned to only a small number of data sets.

This approach enables solutions on very different scales. They start with a simple workstation solution in the course of product dispatch. Each individual product – from simple packaging for tablets to high-tech components – is authenticated and the corresponding data stored in a database. This database can simply be part of an existing production or inventory control system of the manufacturer. If a complaint is received about a product or it falls under a maintenance contract then it can readily be established, without any doubt, if it is actually from the manufacturer.

Entire value-added chains can be monitored in a similar manner. This requires further scanners at different points that can all access a database with the primary scans. This database at the facilities of the manufacturer or an external provider can be linked to the different scanners via the Internet. This allows the authenticity of products to be verified at any point along the entire supply chain. The basis is always the primary scan as the product leaves the facilities of the manufacturer. If fakes are discovered then it is easy to determine when and where they entered the supply chain.

Bayer Technology Services offers an attractive license model for such solutions. A charge up to a few euro cents is made just once for each scanned object / primary scan. The costs of scanners, software, and an external database where necessary, are similar to those for a conventional barcode system.
