Authentication solutions
Database-supported authenticity checks
Scenario 2: Small numbers of objects or changing objects
If the numbers are small or if the objects are frequently changing then it is often not worth the cost of modifying production or packaging machinery. Bayer Technology Services has developed a further solution based on ProteXXion® to meet such requirements. Here too, scan data, together with an identifying serial number, are stored in a database. This data is provided on a self-adhesive label that can be applied simply from a roll. Once in place, it cannot be removed from the object without it being destroyed and consequently ensures that the object and marking form an inseparable unit. The surface information can be recaptured at any time and anywhere using a hand-held scanner. Comparison with the primary scan retrieved from the database using the serial number then allows authentication within seconds.

Bayer Technology Services produces and markets such labels in a standard design, but they can also be designed individually if required. They always contain a two-dimensional barcode for the unique serial number, as well as the scan area for laser authentication. As an alternative, the serial number of the label can be replaced by a different product identification number or even a batch number for a group of objects, so that the corresponding primary scan can be quickly retrieved from the database.
The data required for authentication can be integrated into production / inventory control systems already used by the manufacturer, so that no additional database is required. The only costs, apart from the few euro cents for the ProteXXion® labels, are those for the purchase or leasing of the hand-held scanners that are required.
